The Power of Fulfilment Through Experiencing Genuine Appreciation and Selfless Contribution.

 

Just over a week ago, my good friends Peter, Jim and I had the privilege of committing to a whirlwind 4 day trip visiting an orphanage in the Philippines that we had provided some small financial support to in the past...

and what a joy it was to be greeted by 25 excited children giving us 25 individual heart felt hugs as we turned up to "Joyland" (this is the apt name for the orphanage). It is interesting when we compare what these kids have to what our typical Aussie children have – Joyland kids have very little in the way of modern comforts however they are really happy ...happy just to have a roof over their heads, happy when they see food on the table, happy to going to school and receiving an education, and happy to have a loving group of guardians and teachers who dedicate themselves to bringing them up. True happiness comes from genuinely appreciating what you have and from giving to others selflessly.

 

All of us like to receive – compliments, gifts, pay rises, toys (cars, boats, homes)...

 

however, my experience has it that truly deep happiness only really comes from bringing joy to others and/or truly appreciating what we are blessed with in our life. Did you know that when we give happiness to others, we receive happiness? Biochemically, studies have shown measurable increases in brain Serotonin (the "happy" chemical) by those who condition themselves to actively give joy to others each day. But the increase in Serotonin is not only in the donor, it is also in the recipient as well as anyone who happens to be watching the kind act. Hence, an act of kindness raises happiness levels in all 3 parties- donor, recipient, and observer...amazing!

 

I've always enjoyed speaking about success as being a unique combination of not only achievement but also fulfilment....and the latter is a combination of genuine appreciation and sincere & selfless contribution to others. It is so encouraging to see both these important elements of fulfilment in action at Joyland. We gifted the children some new pillows and track pants and they were over the moon....my children (who I love very much) would not even notice if they had a new pillow yet alone view it as a gift!
